Maintain your equipment to prevent future problems and unwanted costs. Keep your cooling and heating system at peak performance by having a contractor do annual pre-season check-ups. Contractors get busy once summer and winter come, so it's best to check the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall. To remember, you might plan the check-ups around the time changes in the spring and fall.
A typical maintenance check-up should include the following.
- Check thermostat settings to ensure the cooling and heating system keeps you comfortable when you are home and saves energy while you are away.
- Tighten all electrical connections and measure voltage and current on motors. Faulty electrical connections can cause unsafe operation of your system and reduce the life of major components.
- Lubricate all moving parts. Parts that lack lubrication cause friction in motors and increases the amount of electricity you use.
- Check and inspect the condensate drain in your central air conditioner, furnace and/or heat pump (when in cooling mode). A plugged drain can cause water damage in the house and affect indoor humidity levels.
- Check controls of the system to ensure proper and safe operation. Check the starting cycle of the equipment to assure the system starts, operates, and shuts off properly.
Cooling Specific
- Clean evaporator and condenser air conditioning coils. Dirty coils reduce the system's ability to cool your home and cause the system to run longer, increasing energy costs and reducing the life of the equipment.
- Check your central air conditioner's refrigerant level and adjust if necessary. Too much or too little refrigerant will make your system less efficient increasing energy costs and reducing the life of the equipment.
- Clean and adjust blower components to provide proper system airflow for greater comfort levels. Airflow problems can reduce your system's efficiency by up to 15 percent.
Heating Specific
- Check all gas (or oil) connections, gas pressure, burner combustion and heat exchanger. Improperly operating gas (or oil) connections are a fire hazard and can contribute to health problems. A dirty burner or cracked heat exchanger causes improper burner operation. Either can cause the equipment to operate less safely and efficiently.
Actions To Do Yourself
- Inspect, clean, or change air filters once a month in your central air conditioner, furnace, and/or heat pump. Your contractor can show you how to do this. A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment, leading to early failure.
- You can find more information at Energy Star.

These are good articles. Since the summer has arrived it is important to have good air conditioning units throughout the house. Usually most houses have these already installed but it is always helpful to check on them everyone once in a while to make sure they are working properly. The summer gets very hot so if you need to spend the extra money to repair or buy a new unit, I would advise to do so. It is even more important to have your air conditioners checked if you have kids or senior citizens living in the house. Without the proper air, they can get dehydrated quickly and even pass out from hot temperatures during the summer.

I really appreciated your tips about how to keep your air conditioner running properly. I never want to go through those torturous summers again! They were miserable!

Maintenance is essential to ensure efficient, trouble-free running of any air conditioning system.Well-maintained air conditioning systems use energy more efficiently – which saves money on energy costs and reduces carbon emissions.
ReplyDeleteAir Conditioning Maintenance
Thanks for this helpful information on heating and AC units. I agree that maintenance is very important in keeping a system working well. I know that without my AC working properly in the summer it would be miserable!
ReplyDeleteAmber Johnson | http://6andfix.com/
I have never had a problem with my air conditioning during the summer. I am really grateful too because of the climate I live in. My sister lives in a city near mine and hers is currently not working right now. I told her she can come over during the day if she needs to so she doesn't overheat. She has come most days this summer. http://www.altacairconditioning.com.au/about
ReplyDeleteThere's a trick I learned to help you make sure your air conditioning or heating will be ready for the temperature change you're expecting that's helped me a lot. If you're ever heading into the colder seasons, have someone come at least a month or so before it starts getting cold to check your heater to see if you need anything fixed at all. It's the same with your air conditioning, but when you're going into hotter seasons instead. It's kept me from having to deal with too much heat or cold in my house for as long as I can remember.
ReplyDelete-Seamus | http://www.935cool.com
Checking the gas connections is so important. You don't want to have a gas leak in the house, because that can lead to poisoning, and a possible explosion. I make sure that I keep up the maintenance every year. It's just so much safer that way. http://www.johnleggsheatingandair.com/blountville-tn-hvac-services.htm
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that cooling and heating specifics were included in the checklist. There are different aspects to each component. The heating, in general, can be more hazardous if it goes unchecked. I highly recommend to check gas levels and pipe connections.
ReplyDeleteElisa Jed | http://www.smithacla.com/about
I wouldn't have thought to clean or adjust my blower components. I just kind of thought since they were blowing air they would be fine. I'll be sure to do that, hopefully let my air conditioning live a little longer before I replace it. Either way, I'll need a company to come and redo my whole heading and cooling system. http://www.airconditioningconcepts.com/about.html
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there was so much it check and fix. This saved me from a small problem getting much bigger. I thought I was out a whole cooling unit but I just had clean out a few parts. Guy Miflin http://mikesbremenserviceinc.com/air-conditioning/
ReplyDeleteIt was really helpful for me when you listed the things I should be doing. I didn't realized I should be cleaning the filters of my heating system. I'll start doing that now, because it will probably save me money down the road. http://plumbingandair.com
ReplyDeleteWow that is a lot of things to look over. The check list will be very helpful when I am checking everything. Thank your for the information. should I do this each winter? Or should I do it at a specific time? http://www.comfortzoneheatnair.com/Heating-and-Cooling-Systems-Elmira-NY.html

ReplyDeleteI think it's a good point that this article mentioned to keep up maintenance on your equipment so that it stays in the best shape possible. It would be a lot easier to pay for little repairs instead of a whole new unit. Good to keep in mind.
ReplyDeleted. http://kohlesandbach.com/service/des-moines-air-conditioning-repair-service/
I am definitely going to follow this advice and stay on top of the maintenance. I would rather fix little problems every now and then rather than to fix a huge problem in the middle of a hot summer day or on a cold winter day. I am going to do a checkup on it tonight. http://www.americanhomeinc.com
ReplyDeleteI cant express how important just checking the heater is. Cleaning it will extend its life. Also, looking for obvious malfunctions is just common sense. My brother and I have done a lot of similar repairs and we have seen stupid things done by smart people. http://allheatingservices.com/Services.html
ReplyDeleteYou're so right about checking the electrical connections and tightening them. I read somewhere that loose connections can make your heater less efficient and sometimes not even work. My heat kind of exploded a few months ago, I'm guessing that that's why it happened.

During the months of extreme weather, heating and cooling check ups are a must. These are some great reminders on what you should check up on depending on what type of weather conditions you are entering. I have used a lot of these tips before and I am sure it has saved me a lot of time and money. Thanks for the tips. http://www.arendoshheating.com/ourservices.asp
ReplyDeleteThe home I recently moved into has an outdated HVAC system. I need to get it replaced soon. unfortunately, I don't really know much about what kind I should install. Do you have any advice regarding this? http://www.climecresidential.com
ReplyDeleteThese pretty much cover all that you should do before major weather changes. I've been thinking of starting this process soon so that I can make sure nothing is broken. Last year I didn't check everything and ended up having to have my A/C replaced completely. I'm going to do all I can to keep it in good condition now. http://www.foxrefrigerationandair.com.au/cooling-services
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate all the advice on these check ups. I didn't do this for a while and I ended up paying a freakishly large bill for my electricity. If you want to save money you should do these tips regularly.

ReplyDeleteI didn't know that you needed to change the filter once a month! I have been changing it way less frequently. I will make sure to check the filter so that my heating system doesn't break down as winter comes around! http://www.a-ccontractors.com
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that there's a check list for things to check for with air conditioning maintenance. I check the thermostat like nobody's business, but I never check for anything else. I really should start lubricating the moving parts in my air conditioner. It seems like it would work a lot better if I would lubricate my A/C's moving parts, and tighten my electrical connections.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cblucashvac.com/air-conditioning-and-heating/
Replacing and cleaning your filter is a great idea. One problem I always run into is the AC leaks. I'm not sure why it does this. My only thought is that it is thawing because I have it so cold, but I'm not positiv e. http://www.cityheatandair.com/services
ReplyDeleteI like how you said to inspect, clean and change all air filters once a month. This is something that I think many people are unaware of. Many people think that you may need to clean it once a month, but changing it is something you don't need to do more than every few months, which is not true. When I was living in my uncle's home, I remember constantly coughing and others in the home coughing too, when the air filters would blow air out of them. I knew it was due to the filters not being changed, although he did clean them, he thought he could go for years at a time without changing them. After me bothering him constantly to change the filters, he finally did and now changes them every few months.

ReplyDeleteHaving a good electrical connection is really important. The previous winter the heating had been working just fine. Then we go to turn it on and it makes weird noises and barely blows hot air. I got my dad to come take a look at it and he was able to fix it.

It is a really good idea to check your cooling system regularly. I'm glad I found this check list. I should bookmark this page so I can reference back to it for my next inspection. Thank you for your help!

You mentioned that a cracked heat exchange will cause your heater to operate wrong, and I think it's really important to emphasize that a dirty burner is just as bad. So many people don't realize that you need to add cleaning to your regular maintenance. Thanks for the informative article! http://www.amyottesplumbing.ca/heating.html
ReplyDeleteI agree that you need to maintain your air conditioning unit in order for it to perform at its optimal level. I remember when I didn't maintain my A/C unit and it broke down. When the repair man came and repaired my A/C unit, he told me that the problem could have been avoided if I had simply maintained the unit. I was so mad at myself when I heard that. Lesson learned.

This was very informative. We really try to keep our systems maintained because we know that doing so will save us money in the long run. We are always looking for other new ideas to help us save on our energy bills, as well. As much as we love our systems, we also like being frugal when we can.

I plan on going through your checklist this weekend to ensure that all my systems are running smoothly. However, I have a question about the second tip you provide. What kind of lubricant should I use on the moving parts? I know there are different kinds, like water based or petroleum based. Could something like WD-40 work? http://www.canuckmechanical.com/en/services.html
ReplyDeleteI wasn't aware that lubricating air conditioning parts could make such a difference in the amount of electricity that is used to run the machine. I know that friction creates energy, but I never considered that it would increase the amount of energy needed to run it. Are there specific types of lubricant that work better than others, or is it that just in applying some that the a/c works better? Sounds like this information could save time and energy for a lot of people. air conditioning service
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should check up on things like this more often. My bill was very high this month and it is a big concern to me. Someone is going to be coming out to see if there is something wrong with my system. Maybe I just need to follow a few of these tips to lower my bill though. http://supercoolheatingandair.com/heating.html
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips and information about checking your AC and heating to make sure that everything is working fine. My heater has been acting really weir lately so maybe I will try and check it first before I call a repair company. Is there anything that I should be aware of before I check it to make sure that I do it right and don't harm myself or the heater? http://www.bristolheatingandair.com
ReplyDeleteThese are all great things to check when inspecting your A/C or heating unit. My heating unit just started having problems a few days ago. I will make sure to check the all the electrical connections to see if any of them have started to come loose. Hopefully that is all the problem is. I don't really want to pay money to have someone come look at my heating unit. Thanks for the great article. http://www.impactairnsw.net.au
